• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Pearl Girl -- A Dog Lover's Delight! : For real dog lovers, one universal regret is that we ourselves don't have nearly enough lifespan to become the privileged guardians to as many dogs as we'd wish, and so it's great fun to at least read about many others! A Dog's Life is a very amusing read, documenting with affection, humor, and intimacy 24 different dogs' endearing (and terrible!) personality quirks, proclivities, and habits. Dogs weave their way quickly into the fabric of our lives, inevitably coming to represent particular eras, and the book reveals a bit about the dogs' humans as well. The loss of a beloved dog is devastating and leaves a terrible hole. Bogyo has written poignant tributes to these particular well-loved companions that warm the heart. One of the great injustices of nature is that a dog's life is much too short. Eventually we will lose them, though hopefully only after sharing a long and happy life. These touching and funny vignettes are not just obituaries, they are celebrations of the bond between dog and human and remind us of why we willingly let ourselves in for the heartache. I don't think I will ever tire of picking up this book and opening up to any page and just smiling at whatever page I read. The obituaries are humorous yet touching and they really bring out the character of the dogs portrayed. I loved that there were photos of the dogs too because that helps bring it to life. This is a book that can be enjoyed over and over again. It does not need to be read sequentially so if you happen to love the picture of the pug, read that one first. It makes no difference. Each short profile celebrates the life of a beloved pet, whose character is made known to us in endearing descriptions of their sweet, humorous, mischievous ways. While none of the pups is perfect, each is unique and honored. I highly recommend reading it in bite-sized pieces, with your dog by your side if you're lucky enough to have one.
